I seem to always have a low germination rate with my peppers, so this year I started them in the small soil blocks, to save space. And the ones that did germinate got upgraded to the bigger blocks for more growing room.

Last year I grew 120 tomato plants. Most were indeterminate (they keep growing tall). For our indeterminate tomato’s, we use conduit pipes that we attach together to form a frame. And then I use jute to string the tomato’s up, we’ve used this method for indeterminate tomatoes for 4 garden seasons now and it works great. Last year was our healthiest tomato season yet so the pipes did get a little too heavy and we continually had to help them out.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I don’t use store bought flour anymore. Everything I make is with fresh milled flour- which does mean changing some recipes. There is a learning curve to fresh milled flour- you can’t always just swap store bought for fresh milled because now you are working with all the bran, germ and endosperm. But that’s what makes it so much better for you! I don’t believe we were ever meant to eat dead flour and that’s why there’s so many gluten intolerances today…

Our end of July Garden- a place of awe, delight, and humility. And I love this quote from Richard Cabot (1868-1939) it reminds me much of the work of a garden:
“work differs from play because play is spontaneous and delightful, while work is done soberly and against resistance. Never the less we work because we want the fruit of work- not from pure dogged determination. To force ourselves along without any desire for a goal of attainment is drudgery.

Work is doing what you don’t now enjoy for the sake of a future which you clearly see and desire. Drudgery is doing under strain what you don’t now enjoy and for no end that you can now appreciate.”

To see the fruit of the work of our hands from the Spring come to life in the Summer is so satisfying- even when everything doesn’t go to plan (ie the humility side of working in the garden, there are a lot of factors out of our control, which makes any amount of harvest all the more sweet.)
